This year, I needed to have my car smogged before registering it with the State. Unfortunately, my normal smog station had shut its doors, moved out and the entire complex in which it resided was leveled for redevelopment. Yelp helped me find Jeff, whose shop is just 4 blocks away from my home.
During my conversation with him about the posters on his garage wall (one of which was Nike’s Objectify Me, featuring runner Lauren Fleshman), I found out that he loves to run marathons. He’s run many of the prestigious ones, including the New York Marathon. He was happy to let me take his picture, and when I asked him to hold up one of his medals, without thinking he picked up the one he earned in Boston.
When I set out that morning to drive my car to Jeff’s garage, I was surprised to find that I pass it everyday at some point. The place is tucked behind a body show, and super small, with just enough space to fit a very small open office, testing equipment and one car. It was even more surprising to find that it was owned by an avid, accomplished runner. He’s a super nice guy top it off. This will be my regular Test Only station.
