Welcome to the Musea Podcast! This is episode #11 featuring film photographer, Jonathan Canlas!

If you don’t know who Jonathan Canlas is, then you are in for an amazing treat! I’ve followed Jonathan’s work for the past 6 years or so, and I’ve grown to respect his approach to photography, business and art. He’s a straight talker and holds nothing back, so if you are in need of a good kick in the butt, then this podcast is for you. In this interview, Canlas talks about why he is a photographer, why he shoots film, the theme of family in his work and the importance of vision, plus a ton of other inspiring topics!

Make sure to connect with Jonathan Canlas in the following ways:

  • Pick up his book ‘Film Is Not Dead: A Digital Photographer’s Guide to Shooting Film’ on Amazon.com - LINK!
  • You can find out when, where and why you should go to one of his amazing FIND workshops - HERE!
  • Connect with him on twitter @jonathancanlas
  • Finally, check out his wedding, commercial and personal work at jonathancanlasphotography.com

One of the things Jonathan talks about in the podcast is how consistent his work is, whether he’s being paid or not. He mentions that his biggest commercial job ever, came last year in Hawaii and within the same year he took his family on vacation to Hawaii. Below are images from both bodies of work. Can you tell which images he shot for a big commercial job and which ones he shot while on vacation?

Here is some of his recent personal work:

During the podcast Canlas tells a story about one of his favorite images. Below is that image:

Finally, towards the end of the podcast I asked Jonathan about some of the emotional shoots he’s done. He talked about the funeral he shot for his friend and fellow photographer, Natalie Norton, who lost a child. Below is the video of his work from that challenging shoot:

I remember listening to Jonathan Canlas speak in Vegas at WPPI a couple of years ago. Been a fan ever since. His answers on Formspring are not only educational, but entertaining as well.
